Curry With a Side Order of Charity

The brothers behind Rasoi Indian Kitchen are continuing to put their energies into helping some of the poorest people in Punjab – by funding two new ambulances to the Sikhi Sewa Mission.

Around 100,000 of Punjab’s poorest people have already been given free medical care over the past 12 years thanks to the work of Suki and Jas Kullar, the driving force behind Sikhi Sewa Mission UK, a charity set up by their family that has helped to build and sustain a hospital which provides free treatment for people living in Dera Baba Nanak in the district of Gurdaspur in Punjab.

The delivery of the ambulances in February will mean that people living in isolated areas with no means of travelling for health care will have access to the professional help they need.

Suki Kullar said: “We are very much part of the community here in Swansea but as a family we have always retained our ties to Punjab, and we go back regularly.

“It is a fascinating part of the world but it is home to many people who struggle to sustain a decent standard of living, and healthcare is a major issue.

He continued: “These ambulances will take medical care to people in their own towns and villages – often offering quite simple procedures and treatments, but they are treatments that vastly improve people's daily lives."

In recent years the brothers have expanded the remit of their work with the charity to include education and wedding provision as well as healthcare, with the determination to supporting people at every stage of their lives.

The charity now funds the running of a hospital employing two full-time doctors and providing free medical care for anyone needing treatment in the area.

This includes cataract and cleft palette operations, as well as general surgery procedures for those who otherwise would be unable to afford this basic, yet fundamentally important, healthcare.

The Sikhi Sewa Mission UK now also provides an education programme which funds admission to schools, uniform and stationery for children across a number of cities in Punjab.
